Mateo is the Spanish form of Matthew, from the Hebrew Mattityahu, and means "gift of God" or "gift of Yahweh". It is one of the clearest success stories of the Hispanic community in US naming: Mateo stood at number 428 in 2000, reached the top 100 in 2015 and the top 10 in 2023, and ranks eighth among all boys' names in 2025.
