Matteo is the Italian form of Matthew, from the Hebrew Mattityahu, and means "gift of God". The apostle and evangelist Matthew made the name a staple throughout Christian Europe, and the Italian spelling gives it a warm, melodic sound. In the United States Matteo has climbed from number 890 in 2000 to number 191 in 2015 and to number 146 in 2025, close to its 2024 peak of number 138.
