Sebastian comes from the Latin Sebastianus, "from Sebaste", a town whose Greek name means "venerable" or "revered". Saint Sebastian, the martyr pierced by arrows, made it a name of saints and painters, and Bach made it a name of musicians. Sebastian has been in the top 100 in the United States since 2000, climbed to thirteenth place in 2022 and ranks sixteenth in 2025.
