Shiloh is a Hebrew place name, usually explained as "tranquil" or "peaceful one"; it was the town where the Ark of the Covenant stood before Jerusalem, and in a passage of Genesis the word is read as a title of the Messiah. For Americans it also names the bloody Civil War battle of 1862 and the dog in the children's novel Shiloh. Used for both sexes, Shiloh entered the US top 1000 for boys in 2015 and has risen from number 894 that year to number 278 in 2025, its highest rank so far.
