Mattias is the Scandinavian form of Matthias, which goes back to the Hebrew Mattityahu and means "gift of God" or "gift of Yahweh". In the New Testament Matthias is the apostle chosen to replace Judas, and the name is a staple in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Mattias is a rare choice in the United States: it rose from number 3,263 in 2000 to its best position of number 1,115 in 2021 and stands at number 1,233 in 2025.
