Matthias is the Greek form of the Hebrew Mattityahu and means "gift of God" or "gift of Yahweh", the same root as Matthew. In the Acts of the Apostles Matthias is the disciple chosen to replace Judas, and the name has been common in German-speaking Europe for centuries. Matthias entered the US top 1000 in 2003 and has climbed slowly to number 372 in 2025, its best rank so far.
