Indy is a short form of Indiana and India and, for many Americans, a friendly word of its own: the nickname of Indianapolis, home of the Indy 500, and of the movie hero Indiana Jones. As a girls' name it is best read as "a short form of Indiana or India", chosen for its bouncy, spirited sound rather than any ancient meaning. Indy entered the US top 1000 in 2023 and ranks number 768 in 2025, its best rank so far.
