Achilles is the Latin form of the Greek Achilleus, the hero of Homer's Iliad whose only weak spot was his heel. The name's meaning is uncertain; the most common explanation links it to achos, "grief" or "pain", as in the grief his wrath brought to his people. Achilles had fewer than 30 births a year in 2000, entered the top 1000 in 2015, peaked at number 857 in 2018 and ranks number 1290 in 2025.
