Ulysses is the Latin form of the Greek Odysseus, the wandering hero of Homer's epic, and the name is usually explained as "wrathful" or "the one who hates", from the Greek odyssomai. In America it is forever tied to President Ulysses S. Grant, and in literature to James Joyce's novel. Ulysses sat in the US top 1000 at the turn of the century with a peak of number 760 in 2001, has hovered between 1022 and 1294 for the last decade and ranks 1201 in 2025.
