Theodore comes from the Greek Theodoros and means "gift of God", from theos, god, and doron, gift. President Theodore Roosevelt is its most famous American bearer, and the teddy bear is named after him. After decades in the middle of the rankings, Theodore shot up from number 99 in 2015 to the top 10 in 2021 and ranks fourth among boys' names in 2025.
