Salome comes from the Hebrew shalom and means "peace". The New Testament names a Salome among the women who followed Jesus and witnessed the crucifixion; the dancing daughter of Herodias, who is unnamed in the Gospels, received the same name from the historian Josephus and later from Oscar Wilde's play. In the United States Salome rose from number 1703 in 2015 into the top 1000 at number 951 in 2024 and ranks number 1042 in 2025.
