Tamar is a Hebrew name meaning "date palm", a tree that stood for grace and fruitfulness in the ancient Near East. The Bible has three women of the name, including Judah's daughter-in-law and King David's daughter, and Queen Tamar ruled Georgia at the height of its medieval golden age. In the United States Tamar is used mostly in Jewish and Armenian families; it ranked number 1757 in 2000, peaked at number 1740 in 2003 and stands at number 2455 in 2025 with 73 girls.
