Philippa is the feminine form of Philip and comes from the Greek philos and hippos, meaning "lover of horses" or "friend of horses". Philippa of Hainault was queen of England in the 14th century, and the name has stayed a British upper-class classic, usually shortened to Pippa. In the United States it remains rare: Philippa reached number 2442 in 2022 and ranks 2808 among girls in 2025.
