Mazie is a pet form of Margaret, by way of Maisie, and so goes back to the Greek margarites, "pearl". The Scottish diminutive Maisie came first; the Z spelling has an American flavor and belongs to U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii. Mazie, a top 500 name around 1900, has returned: it climbed from number 3439 in 2000 into the US top 1000 in 2023 and ranks number 966 among girls' names in 2025.
