Mable is an old alternative spelling of Mabel, which comes from the Latin amabilis and means "lovable" or "dear". Both spellings were everywhere in the United States around 1900, when Mabel was a top 20 name, and Mable in particular was common in the South. After decades of near silence Mable is returning on the heels of Mabel's revival: it ranked number 4040 in 2000, number 5950 in 2015 and has climbed every year since to number 2450 in 2025, its best rank of the century, with 73 girls.
