Opal is a gemstone name from the Sanskrit upala, "precious stone", the iridescent October birthstone. Popular around 1900 alongside Pearl and Ruby, it has returned with the taste for vintage jewel names. Opal came back into the US top 1000 in 2017 and has climbed every year since to number 423 in 2025, its best rank of this century.
