Edith is an Old English name, Eadgyth, that means "prosperous in war" or "rich in battle", from ead, wealth, and gyth, war; it was the name of a 10th-century English saint and survived the Norman Conquest better than most Anglo-Saxon names. The novelist Edith Wharton and the singer Edith Piaf are its best-known modern bearers. Edith has stayed in the US top 1000 throughout this century, peaked at number 472 in 2020 and ranks number 499 in 2025.
