Lipa is a Yiddish pet form of Lipman, itself a short form of Yom Tov Lipmann, a traditional Jewish name whose second part comes from the Middle High German liep, "dear", so it is read as "dear man". It is used almost exclusively in Hasidic communities, where the singer Lipa Schmeltzer is a well-known bearer. In the United States Lipa has edged up from number 2794 in 2015 to number 2163 in 2024 and stands at number 2374 in 2025.
