Hades is the name of the Greek god of the underworld and of the underworld itself; the name is of uncertain meaning and was traditionally explained by the Greeks as "the unseen one". Long avoided because of its dark associations, it has been rediscovered by parents who like bold mythological names such as Ares and Odin. Hades had fewer than five births in 2000, jumped from number 6924 in 2019 to number 3229 in 2020 and reaches its best rank so far in 2025 at number 2901 with 43 births.
