Genesis is the Greek word for "origin" or "beginning" and the title of the first book of the Bible, which tells of the creation of the world. As a girls' name it took off in the United States in the 1990s, especially among Hispanic families, and the band Genesis gave the word a pop-culture echo. Genesis ranked number 247 in the United States in 2000, entered the top 100 in 2008, peaked at number 55 in 2013 and ranks number 66 among girls in 2025.
