Elvira is a Spanish name of Visigothic origin whose meaning is uncertain; it is usually explained as "all true" or "foreign and true", from the Germanic ala, all, and wer, true. It appears as Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni and, in a very different register, as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the horror hostess played by Cassandra Peterson. In the United States Elvira ranked number 1804 in 2000, dipped to around number 3000 and has recovered to number 1715 in 2025, its best rank in this period.
