Leonor is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Eleanor, a name of uncertain origin that goes back to the Occitan Alienor; it is traditionally explained as "the other Aenor" or linked to the Greek eleos, "compassion". Eleanor of Aquitaine carried it across medieval Europe, and today it belongs to Leonor, Princess of Asturias, the heir to the Spanish throne. In the United States Leonor ranked number 3489 in 2000, reached number 2078 in 2024 and stood at number 2267 in 2025.
