Coraline is an elaborated form of Cora or Coral and is usually explained as "maiden", from the Greek kore, or as "coral", from the Latin corallium. The name was rare until Neil Gaiman's 2002 novel Coraline and the 2009 stop-motion film gave it a brave young heroine. Coraline entered the US top 1000 in 2012, peaked at number 579 in 2015 and has stayed between 580 and 720 since, ranking number 683 in 2025.
