Caroline is the French feminine form of Charles and means "free woman", from the Germanic karl, free man. It became an English royal name through Queen Caroline, wife of George II, and Americans know it from Caroline Kennedy and from Neil Diamond's song Sweet Caroline. Caroline has ranked in the US top 100 every year since 2000, peaked at number 55 in 2017 and is number 96 in 2025.
