Ananias is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Hananiah and means "Yahweh is gracious" or "God has shown favor". The New Testament has several men of the name, most memorably Ananias of Damascus, the disciple who restored Paul's sight after his conversion. In the United States Ananias is a rare, mostly Southern and African American choice: it ranked number 5306 in 2000, has stayed in the 3000s for most of the past decade and reaches its best rank, number 2452, in 2025 with 55 boys.
