Zyir is a modern American coinage, most likely a streamlined respelling of Zaire, the former name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which comes from a Kikongo word for "river". The Zy- opening links it to Zyaire and Zyion, and it is a close relative of Nyzir. Zyir ranked in the low 3000s in 2015, improved steadily through the 2020s, peaked at number 2077 in 2024 and ranks number 2479 in 2025 with 55 boys.
