Veronica is traditionally explained as the Latin vera icon, "true image", after the woman who wiped Jesus's face on the way to Calvary, but it is in fact a Latin form of the Greek Berenice, "bringing victory". Veronica Lake and the Archie comics' Veronica Lodge are famous American bearers. Veronica was number 143 in 2000 and has drifted to number 427 in 2025.
