Susan is the English form of Susanna, from the Hebrew Shoshannah, "lily", which in modern Hebrew also means "rose". Susan B. Anthony, the pioneer of women's suffrage, is its most important American bearer. Susan was one of the top five girls' names of the 1950s and 1960s, had fallen to number 409 by 2000 and dropped out of the top 1000 in 2018; it ranks number 1091 in 2025.
