Susanna comes from the Hebrew Shoshannah and means "lily", a flower that also lent its name to the Persian city of Susa. The Bible knows two bearers: the virtuous Susanna defended by Daniel in the Apocrypha, and a follower of Jesus named in the Gospel of Luke. In the United States the name has stayed just outside the top 1000 all century, hovering between number 1100 and 1450, and its rank of 1181 in 2025 is its strongest showing in more than a decade.
