Salvador is a Spanish and Portuguese name taken from the Latin salvator and means "savior", a title of Christ that became a given name in Catholic countries. The painter Salvador Dalí is its most famous bearer, and the country El Salvador and the Brazilian city of Salvador carry the same word. In the United States the name belongs almost entirely to Hispanic families; it ranked number 330 in 2000, peaked at number 329 in 2001 and has settled at number 756 in 2025.
