Francisco is the Spanish and Portuguese form of the Latin Franciscus, meaning "Frenchman" or "free man", a name spread by Saint Francis of Assisi. The painter Francisco Goya and the conquistador Francisco Pizarro bore it, and San Francisco is named after the saint. In the United States Francisco ranked 139th in 2000, peaked at number 137 in 2001 and has eased to 322nd place among boys' names in 2025.
