Rosaline is a variant of Rosalind, a Germanic name from hros, horse, and lind, "tender" or "soft", which was later reinterpreted through the Latin rosa linda as "pretty rose". Shakespeare used Rosaline twice, for Romeo's first love in Romeo and Juliet and for a witty lady in Love's Labour's Lost. In the United States the name climbed from number 4476 in 2015 to number 2192 in 2025, its highest rank so far, with 85 births.
