Pierre is the French form of Peter, from the Greek petros, "rock" or "stone", the name Jesus gave the apostle Simon as the foundation of his church. It is one of the classic French names, borne by Pierre Curie and Pierre Trudeau, and in America it is most common in Louisiana and in Haitian and West African families. Pierre stood at number 926 in 2000, dropped out of the US top 1000 shortly afterward and ranks number 1,253 in 2025.
