Andre is the French and Portuguese form of Andrew, which comes from the Greek andreios and means "manly" or "brave". In the United States it has been popular in African American families for decades and is familiar through tennis champion Andre Agassi and rapper André 3000. Andre ranked number 197 in 2000, its best this century, and has eased gradually to number 368 in 2025.
