Jacques is the French form of James and Jacob, from the Hebrew Ya'aqov, usually explained as "holder of the heel" or "supplanter". Ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau made it familiar to American television audiences, and it has a long history in Louisiana. Jacques ranked number 1093 in 2000 and number 1091 in 2001, its best year, and stands at number 1938 in 2025.
