Orin has two main sources: it is a spelling of the Hebrew Oren, meaning "pine tree", and of the Irish Odhrán, a diminutive meaning "little pale green one" or "sallow". Saint Odhrán was a companion of Saint Columba on Iona. Short and gentle, Orin sits comfortably next to Owen and Odin. It ranked number 2608 in 2000, peaked at number 1640 in 2017 and stands at number 1859 in 2025.
