Owen is the English form of the Welsh Owain, which is usually traced to the Latin Eugenius and means "well-born" or "noble"; a Welsh root meaning "young warrior" has also been suggested. Owain Glyndwr, the last Welsh prince of Wales, is the name's most famous medieval bearer. In the United States Owen moved from number 145 in 2000 into the top 100 by 2002, peaked at number 18 in 2022 and ranks number 31 among boys in 2025.
