Moses is the name of the prophet who led the Israelites out of Egypt; in the Bible it is explained from the Hebrew mashah, "drawn out of the water", though scholars also connect it to the Egyptian word for "son" or "born of", as in Ramesses. It has been used by Jewish, Christian and Black American families for centuries. Moses has stayed in the US top 1000 since 2000, peaked at number 441 in 2006 and ranks number 515 in 2025.
