Mar is the Spanish word for "sea" and comes from the Marian title Nuestra Señora del Mar, Our Lady of the Sea; girls named María del Mar are often simply called Mar. It is a classic in Catalonia and along the Spanish coast and has recently been picked up as a stand-alone name. In the United States Mar was almost unknown in 2000, at number 16623, and has climbed sharply to number 3105 in 2022 and number 1708 in 2025.
