Luz is the Spanish word for "light" and comes from the Marian title Nuestra Señora de la Luz, Our Lady of Light, so it is a devotional name in the same family as Dolores and Mercedes. It is short, bright and easy to pair with a second name, as in María de la Luz. In the United States Luz was number 533 in 2000, dropped out of the top 1000 for a decade and came back in 2022; it ranks number 839 among girls in 2025.
