Jasmine comes from the Persian yasamin and simply means "jasmine flower", the fragrant white blossom that perfumers have prized for centuries. Disney's Aladdin gave the name to its princess in 1992, and American parents responded immediately. Jasmine was number 27 among US girls' names in 2000 and peaked at number 25 the following year; it was still close to the top 100 in 2015 at number 110 and ranks number 206 in 2025.
