Iona is the name of the small Hebridean island where Saint Columba founded his monastery in 563 and from which Christianity spread through Scotland. The island's name is of uncertain origin, probably a medieval misreading of the Latin Ioua, though it is often explained through the Old Norse ey, "island", or the Greek ion, "violet flower". Iona ranked number 4578 in 2000, reached number 2416 in 2022 and sits at number 2667 in 2025 with 65 girls.
