Hindy is a Yiddish pet form of Hinda, which comes from the Yiddish and German word for the "hind" or "doe", a female deer, and belongs to the group of animal names that Ashkenazi Jews have used for centuries. The spelling with y is the usual one in Hasidic communities in New York, where almost all American Hindys are born. Hindy has risen from number 3448 in 2015 to number 1814 in 2025, its highest rank on record.
