Frederick is the English form of the Germanic Friedrich and means "peaceful ruler", from frid, "peace", and ric, "ruler". It was a royal name in Prussia and Denmark, and in America it belongs to abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass. The name has been remarkably stable in the United States, ranking number 395 in 2000 and number 435 in 2025, after a small rise in the last two years.
