Freddy is a pet form of Frederick, from the Germanic Friduric, which means "peaceful ruler", from frid, peace, and ric, ruler or power; in Latino families it also serves as a nickname for Alfredo. Horror fans know it from Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street. In the United States Freddy ranked number 609 in 2000, peaked at number 606 in 2003 and has declined since, leaving the top 1000 in 2016 and standing at number 1422 in 2025.
