Edmund is an Old English name composed of ead, "wealth" or "fortune", and mund, "protection", so it is usually read as "wealthy protector". Saint Edmund the Martyr was a king of East Anglia in the ninth century, Sir Edmund Hillary was the first to climb Everest, and C. S. Lewis gave the name to Edmund Pevensie in the Narnia books. In the United States Edmund has hovered just outside the top 1000 for decades, at number 1138 in 2000 and number 1082 in 2025.
