Elouise is a variant spelling of Eloise, from the Old French Héloïse, which most likely goes back to the Germanic Helewidis, "hale" and "wide", although many connect it with Louise, "famous warrior". The medieval scholar Héloïse, famous for her love letters with Abelard, made the name legendary. Elouise is a newcomer in the United States: it entered the top 1000 in 2023 and has risen to number 788 in 2025, its best rank yet.
