Elio is an Italian and Spanish name with two roots: it is the form of Helios, the Greek word for "sun", and it was also used for the Roman family name Aelius and as a short form of Elijah. The film Call Me by Your Name (2017), whose hero is named Elio, gave the name a surge in the United States. Elio only entered the top 1000 in 2021 and has leapt to number 388 in 2025, its best rank yet.
