Eleonor is a spelling of Eleanor used in Scandinavia and parts of continental Europe, which goes back to the Occitan Aliénor of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the 12th-century queen of France and then England. The name's meaning is uncertain; it is traditionally explained as "the other Aenor", after her mother, or linked to Helen, "light". Eleonor had fewer than five births in 2000 and has risen steadily in the 2020s, reaching number 2659 in 2025, its best rank so far, with 65 girls.
