Damien is the French form of Damian, which comes from the Greek Damianos and is usually explained as "to tame" or "to subdue". Saint Damian, a physician martyred with his brother Cosmas, made the name common in the Christian world, and Father Damien of Molokai, who cared for leprosy patients in Hawaii, is honored with a statue in the US Capitol. In the United States Damien peaked at number 182 in 2007 and ranks number 352 in 2025.
